A letter from Francis Blair to John Bigelow, U. S. Minister to France, introducing a Civil War Medal of Honor winner, Major General Adelbert Ames. Ames later became the Reconstruction Governor of Mississippi. Letter refers to Ames' gallant conduct in battle, explaining that he traveled to France for increased usefulness in his profession by observing the French army. Blair requests Bigelow's friendly aid for him.

John Bigelow was born in Malden-on-Hudson, New York. He was admitted to the bar in 1838. From 1849 to 1861, he was one of the editors and co-owners of the New York Evening Post. He was active in the Republican Party and in 1860, President Abraham Lincoln appointed him American Consul in Paris in 1861 and later served as American ambassador to France. Blair was born in Lexington, Kentucky. He was the third and youngest son of newspaper editor and politician Francis Preston Blair, and Eliza Violet (Gist) Blair. Adelbert Ames was born in 1835 in the town of Rockland (then known as East Thomaston), located in Knox County, Maine.
